Your workout clothes handle sweat, stretching and plenty of movement. A little care on laundry day helps keep your favorite leggings, sports bras and matching sets feeling good and looking their best.
Wondering how to wash activewear without fading the color or losing the fit? Start with the care label, then use these simple tips to build a gentler laundry routine.
1. Check the care label first
Different fabrics and finishes need different treatment. Read the label before washing a new piece, even if it looks similar to something you already own. The garment's instructions take priority over general advice, including the tips below. If it says hand wash only, keep it out of the machine.
2. Sort your workout clothes before washing
Separate light colors from dark ones. Wash activewear with similar lightweight garments rather than heavy jeans or towels, which can rub against delicate fabrics. Keep items with exposed zippers or hook-and-loop fasteners out of the same load to reduce the chance of snags.
If your leggings or shorts have a drawstring, secure it loosely before washing so it does not slip back into the waistband.

3. Turn leggings and tops inside out
Turning workout clothes inside out helps protect their outer surface from rubbing during the wash. It also exposes the side that has been in contact with your skin.
Check for mud or grass stains before loading the machine. Gently pretreat them with a product suitable for the fabric, following its instructions. Avoid vigorous scrubbing that could damage the surface.
4. Skip fabric softener
Fabric softener can leave a coating on technical fabrics and interfere with their moisture-wicking performance. Your activewear does not need it to feel comfortable.
Choose a suitable liquid laundry detergent without added softener. Follow the detergent's dosing instructions for your load size and water hardness. Extra detergent is not a shortcut to cleaner clothes and can leave residue behind.
5. Choose a cool, gentle wash
When the care label allows machine washing, a gentle cycle at 30°C (86°F) is a useful starting point. Use a low spin setting where possible. Around 400 rpm is an option on machines that offer it, but check your garment's instructions and your machine's settings rather than treating one number as a rule for every item.
Avoid choosing a hotter or more aggressive cycle simply because your clothes are sweaty. Let the care label guide you.
6. Air-dry in the shade
For these activewear care tips, skip the tumble dryer and let your clothes dry naturally in a well-ventilated, shaded spot. High heat can be hard on stretch fabrics and affect their fit over time.
Take your clothes out of the machine promptly when the cycle finishes. Leaving them damp in the drum can encourage musty odors. Give each piece enough space to dry, and bring it in once it is ready rather than leaving it in heat or direct sunlight for hours.
Your activewear laundry checklist
- Read the care label.
- Separate light and dark colors.
- Keep heavy fabrics and snagging fasteners out of the load.
- Turn garments inside out and gently treat visible stains.
- Use the right amount of detergent without fabric softener.
- Choose a cool wash and gentle spin if the label allows.
- Remove promptly and air-dry in the shade.
A consistent, gentle routine is easier than trying to rescue a favorite pair after a harsh wash. Give your workout leggings and activewear sets the care their labels recommend, so they are ready for your next session.
